A few weeks ago, we posted about the upcoming kitchen trends for 2022 ([6 Rock Solid Kitchen Trends](https://www.solidstone.ca/6-rock-solid-kitchen-trends/)), so we figured it would be a good time to post something similar for all the trends we’re seeing coming for bathrooms this year. Bathrooms are often the smallest room in the house, but even such a tiny room can make a huge impact on your home. Whether you’re looking to remodel a main bathroom that is used by everyone in the house (and guests) or a secluded sanctuary-style spa of an ensuite just for you, the features and finishes you choose in a bathroom can change the look and feel drastically. ## Caring for Your Granite Countertop
Granite countertops have become a common material in homes and businesses, especially for countertops, and with good reason! [Granite countertops](https://solidstone.ca/what-we-offer/) are very hard and dense, making them hard to scratch and well suited for high traffic areas.
Polished granite is usually used for [kitchen countertops](https://solidstone.ca/what-we-offer/kitchen-countertops-gallery/) because they have very high surface tension. This makes them naturally resistant to staining and moisture. But, this isn’t to say that they are effortless — granite countertops require regular maintenance to ensure they stay beautiful. You will need to make sure that the granite is sealed periodically to protect your investment, and staying on top of things like stains, cracks, or chips will also help the integrity of your countertop in the long run.
## Basic and Every Day Cleaning
Using a microfiber cloth to dust the surface and clean food particles and crumbs off should be a daily thing. When dealing with a spill, try to wipe down the granite countertop daily or as needed using only water. The downside of a quartz countertop is that the color will fade if exposed for long periods of time in harsh, direct sunlight.

As one would expect, we love stone. It’s beautiful, durable, long-lasting, and an ideal choice for many applications. Not all stone is created equal, and it can sometimes be difficult to decide which one is best for your project. In this article we’d like to explore the different options and their strengths and weaknesses so you can make an informed decision and get you on your way to bringing this exceptional material into your home.
#### **Natural Vs. Manufactured**
At [Solid Stone Countertops](https://solidstone.ca/) we carry 5 different types of stone. Of them, three (**Granite, Marble and Quartzite**) are naturally-occurring, which means they are mined from quarries, cut into slabs, polished and then brought to us where we fabricate and install the finished product. Because it’s a natural product, no two pieces are the same. Variations in colour and veining (the meandering lines of colour that run through stone) are what make each piece unique and are one of the most desirable characteristics of natural stone. Flaws and fractures are also something to consider with natural stone. We inspect each piece carefully before planning our cuts to ensure you are receiving the best possible product.
**Quartz** is a manufactured stone made by mixing quartz chips or dust with a heavy duty resin to form an extremely durable surface. The size of the quartz pieces is what defines the look of each style. Larger chips create a speckled appearance, while finer dust-like particles make for a smooth, uniform look. Colour and style options for quartz products are vast, and artificial veining is often added for that natural, organic look.
**Porcelain** slabs are created using a similar process to porcelain tile, which are then cut to fit just like stone. Thinner than stone, they often require a mitred edge to give you the look of a thick counter.
#### **Durability and Care**
Stone is an extremely durable product, and will withstand heavy use for a long time, but it is not indestructible. While many stones are heat resistant, and likely be fine if you need to briefly put hot pans down, we don’t recommend habitually using it this way, as it can cause stress. Manufactured stone like Quartz and Porcelain require no regular care, but Granite is best when properly protected. At Solid Stone, we pre-seal our stone surfaces with a 10-year sealant, so sealing isn’t necessary for at least that long. After that point, a yearly application is recommended. Sealing granite is a simple process and is easily and quickly done yourself.
With all stone, care should be taken to wipe up spills quickly. Though it’s rare, some oils and heavily acidic or deeply-coloured substances can stain. Handle foods with excessive natural or artificial colours carefully, and if you do spill, clean it up right away with a damp soapy cloth. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners.
Using knives on stone surfaces is generally a bad idea, both for your [countertops](https://solidstone.ca/custom-countertops-for-your-home/) and for the knives themselves. While most stone is hard enough to deter scratches from an average kitchen knife, the last thing you want to see on your brand new countertop are marks or scratches. Stone however, is particularly harmful to your knives. Cutting directly on stone will dull your knives quickly and as any good chef will tell you, the most dangerous kitchen knife is a dull one. Making sure you have a good cutting board is the best way to protect both investments (and your fingers).

## Frequently Asked Questions about Stone Countertops in Winnipeg
We often get asked the same questions, and while we’re happy to answer, we’ve also taken the time to compile a page of our most-common questions. Is the answer to yours here?
### What types of stone countertops do you offer in Winnipeg?
We regularly fabricate quartz, granite, porcelain, quartzite and marble countertops and other stone applications in Winnipeg and surrounding areas for both commercial and residential projects.
### We live outside of Winnipeg, can you supply stone countertops to us?
Yes! We fabricate stone for homes and businesses in southern Manitoba and Western Ontario. Depending where you live there may be additional travel charges, but we are happy to fabricate, deliver and install your stone.
### What is the difference between quartz and granite countertops?
Granite is a natural stone, each unique piece cut from quarries and finished into slabs for fabrication, while quartz is manufactured with a mixture of ground quartz and resin and then patterned for a flawless consistency. ### Which stone countertop is best for kitchens in Winnipeg’s climate?
For most indoor applications in climate-controlled homes and businesses, any type of stone would be suitable. For outdoor applications with extreme temperature fluctuations like we have in Winnipeg, we recommend granite to withstand sun, cold and changing conditions. ### How do I choose the right stone for my countertops?
Because stone countertops are similarly fabricated, and differences in durability, longevity and care are minimal, choosing the right stone for you generally comes down to style and taste. Choose your stone based on which one you love and you’ll be happy with it for decades. ### Are stone countertops heat-resistant?
All stone countertops we fabricate are very heat-resistant, though we do still recommend protecting your surface. High heat exposure can alter/dull polished finishes on quartz, and while granite is extremely resistant to heat, there is always a risk of a small, undetectable flaw that might be aggravated. ### Is there a warranty on your quartz countertops?
Yes!
We guarantee that your new quartz surface is free from fabrication and installation defects, and that the product has been inspected and approved under strict quality guidelines.
This warranty is valid for a period of ONE YEAR from the date of installation
Any claim made against this warranty must be submitted in writing.
This warranty applies to all quartz installed in its original location by a Solid Stone-certified professional and is void if the quartz is moved from the original location of installation or if any workmanship is provided by a party other than Solid Stone.
Solid Stone, at its discretion, will repair or replace the affected material if it fails as a result of faulty fabrication or installation. The cost of repair or replacement shall be borne by Solid Stone and includes all associated labor charges.
If replacement of the stone is required, all efforts will be made to replicate the original stone surfaces as closely as possible with respect to color, grain and grade.
We reserve the right to exclude defect or damage caused by the following:
• Customer abuse or misuse.
• Failure to clean & maintain stone in accordance with Solid Stone
recommendations.
• Staining and/or naturally occurring discolourations in the stone.
### I'm replacing my countertops and keeping existing cabinets, can you fabricate to fit?
Yes! We can definitely fabricate countertops to fit an existing space. In order to accurately template an existing space for new stone countertops, the existing countertops will need to be removed. This means you won’t have countertops for the week or two it takes us to fabricate and install, so be prepared for that. Another thing that’s helpful to know, if you currently have laminate countertops, sometimes the cabinetry is built differently. ### How do I care for and clean my stone countertop?
Stone countertops are easy to care for. Generally you can avoid chips and scratches by using a cutting board when you’re using tools and being careful not to drop anything on the edges, and avoid stains by wiping spills promptly. Other than that, wiping with a damp cloth is all you’ll need to keep it looking it’s best. ### Do stone countertops require regular sealing?
Most stone varieties don’t require regular sealing. All granite we sell comes with a sealer already applied that should last approximately 10 years of average use. After that time (or if you notice water starting to absorb into the stone) a yearly sealing is recommended.
### Can you repair chips and scratches in stone countertops?
Yes! If you have a chip or scratch in your stone countertops, please [contact us](https://www.solidstone.ca/contact/) and we can help.
### How long does it take to fabricate and install a stone countertop?
Depending on how busy we are, our goal is that once you sign a contract, we’d have someone out to digitally template the space and get precision measurements in 7-14 days. Once we have the measurements, it takes approximately 10 days from templating to get to installation. Timelines can vary depending on a number of reasons, but we’ll let you know up front what those might be. ### Do you source your stone locally in Manitoba or import it?
Some granite is cut in local Manitoba quarries, but most stone countertops are imported from quarries and manufacturers all over the world.
### Can you fabricate custom shapes or features like waterfall edges?
Yes we can! We regularly fabricate waterfall edges and we can fabricate stone into whatever shape you need**.**
### What edge profiles are available for stone countertops?
We have a variety of standard edge profiles (eased edge, quarter inch round, quarter inch bevel and half inch round) as well as specialty edges (ogee, rock face and waterfall/bevel). ### How long does a stone countertop installation take?
For most residential countertop projects we are in and out of your home in less than a day. An average sized kitchen usually takes us about half a day to install and then any other areas as needed. Timelines can vary depending on conditions and scope of the project.
### Do I need to prepare my kitchen before custom stone installation?
In order to have a smooth installation, we ask that any loose items be removed between the door and the area of installation to minimize tripping or hazards while moving heavy stone. Also, please ensure the installation area is clear of items, and that drawers in base cabinets and items stored inside base cabinets are removed.
### Can I visit your showroom to view slabs before purchase?
Yes! We have sample pieces available at our Sargent Avenue showroom, and if you would like to view/inspect full slabs or remnant pieces, we can meet you at our Winnipeg shop in St. Boniface.
### Do you offer templating services for accurate countertop measurement?
We digitally template all spaces for accurate measurement and precision stone fabrication.
### How can I prevent staining or etching on my stone surfaces?
Stone can be stained by high-pigment spills or oily materials and etched by acidic spills. In order to prevent staining and etching, wipe spills promptly with a damp cloth. ### Can I cut directly on my stone countertops?
We get this question regularly, and while in most situations you’re unlikely to damage your stone with a knife, we still recommend using a cutting board. Stone is incredibly hard, but in some cases it can scratch. Also, stone is terribly bad for the edge on your knife.
### Do you offer backsplashes made from the same stone as the countertop?
We do! Matching backsplashes are very popular! Ask our team when you’re getting a quote and they will get you started.
### Do you work with Manitoba home builders or contractors on new construction?
We do! Whether you are renovating your home or business, or building something new, we can fabricate countertops for your project. We work well with builders and renovators to provide accurate and prompt scheduling and work closely with them to follow their timelines.

For someone who is not so acquainted with countertops, Solid Stone has made me feel specially equipped with the first hand info they shared (from RFQ, to Store visit, to Templating, to Installation up to the provision of Guidelines for taking care of stones). Special thanks to Beau and Jada for the warmth reception during our visit. I engaged Solid Stone for a couple of DIY projects: a desk counter top area and a bathroom vanity with undermount sink. I was very happy with the entire process- from Summer in Sales to Alex and the rest of the crew at the warehouse. One minor hiccup during fabrication was addressed immediately and beyond my expectations. The product offerings are high quality and the workmanship is excellent. I will definitely return to this company for our next renovation project.

Purchasing new quartz countertops from Solid Stone was a great experience. From templating to install, the experience was very easy the looks amazing. **Durability:** Custom-fabricated stone surfaces are incredibly durable and can easily withstand most of the daily wear and tear you can throw at them. Of all the standard bathroom countertop materials (stone, tile, or laminate mainly), stone is easily the most durable and easiest surface to keep clean. To note, stone countertops can chip, and are most vulnerable at corners and edges, but with minimal care, your countertops will last for decades. **Maintenance:** Stone countertops are very low-maintenance and require very little care. **Selection:** As a manufactured stone, the selection of quartz is only limited to the imagination of our suppliers. While white is by far the most popular colour, quartz can be found in a wide variety of colours and patterns, from speckled to veined, and everything in between.
**Flawless Consistency:** If you’re looking for consistency, quartz countertops are the stone to beat. Manufactured for dependability, quartz does not deviate from piece to piece and will provide a uniform surface for all your needs.
**Durability:** Quartz is made by combining quartz pieces (anything from pebble-sized to dust) with resins to hold it together. While quartz pieces themselves are virtually indestructible, there are a few things to remember when it comes to the resins. Not all resins are created equally, and prolonged exposure to sunlight (think outdoor kitchens), excessive heat and acids can alter your finishes. ### Benefits and Drawbacks of Granite Countertops:
**Selection:** Granite is a natural stone that is cut from quarries, so while there is a large selection of different granite colours and patterns available, it’s not as vast as manufactured stone like quartz. Colours and patterns are limited to what can actually be found in nature.
**Every piece is different… but every piece is different:** The unique natural characteristics of granite mean that each piece has it’s own pattern, and no two pieces are alike. This can be a benefit and a drawback. If you’re hoping for flawless consistency and identical patterns/veining, you’re not going to find it in granite, but that also means you’re not going to find it at your neighbour’s house either.
**Durability:** Durability is granite’s biggest strengths. Extreme heat and cold tolerance makes it a great choice for kitchens (indoors or out, even in very cold climates) and it’s more likely to damage your dishes and cookware than be damaged by normal use. **Maintenance:** Granite countertops are virtually maintenance-free. Our granite comes pre-sealed and other than keeping them clean, you won’t need to do anything special to maintain them for at least 10 years. After that, a yearly application of sealer is a good idea to keep them looking their best indefinitely. Sealer is quick and easy to apply for anyone.

We offer a free initial consultation to get you started. Come down to the showroom and meet with a member of our sales team who can help you pinpoint what you need and what styles will work best in your space. Bringing some inspiration photos and a few pictures of your space will help too!

##### Estimate/Contract
To provide you with an estimate, we require rough measurements. It’s best to bring these along on your initial appointment. Once you decide to move forward with your project, your salesperson will help finalize all the details and order the stone.
##### Verification/Fabrication
At this stage, we will verify all measurements and–using state of the art digital templating techniques–create a template of your stone surface area to the exact specifications needed, ensuring an accurate fit. Then, using the template created, the stone slab is cut and edges are fabricated in our shop. We make sure your project is cut with minimal seams and all surfaces are polished and carefully prepared for shipment.
##### Installation
Our professional installers will arrive on time, as scheduled, to install the countertops. The job site will be left clean and ready for you to enjoy.
At Solid Stone Countertops, we use precision Digital Templating on every project. This ensures all our measurements are accurate and your countertops can be perfectly fabricated to fit your space.

We are very glad that we selected Solid Stone Countertops and chose Alex as our designer. We had looked at other companies and received quotes. ***UNDERMOUNT OR DROP IN?:** Our answer to that is “it depends”. While we love the look of undermount sinks because they showcase our stone surfaces so well, it is true that they leave the most vulnerable spot exposed. While stone countertops are incredibly durable, chipping happens most often at cut edges and corners, so that’s important to take into consideration. Drop-in sinks protect the edges, but with that style of sink, you lose the clean, unobscured surface that undermount sinks provide.
